Description
Precision medicine, sometimes referred to as “personalized medicine”, holds great promise to improve healthcare. As the cost of genetic analysis decreases and research advances, it is becoming increasingly possible to include a person’s genetic makeup in the repertoire of tools that inform their healthcare. This lesson asks students to consider the impact of three genetic analysis techniques used in medicine, and to explore the hopes and societal challenges to adopting precision medicine widely.
Activities
Discussion exercises (10-15 minutes), reflection activity (20 minutes), precision medicine project (40-60 minutes). The reflection activity and project can be done in class or assigned as homework.
