Mini-lesson

Description

Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a rare genetic disorder, characterized by a loss of motor function. Researchers have developed treatments for people with this rare genetic disorder, and this lesson highlights families and patients who are excited about new treatments but also discusses how the cost of these new advances prohibits access for people who might benefit.

This Mini-Lesson was published in 2020 to accompany the PBS documentary “The Gene: An Intimate History” and serves as a snapshot in time. Information in the lesson was accurate at the time of publishing but will not be updated. The activity in this lesson remains impactful, but you may want to seek other sources for up-to-date information about SMA, available treatments, and the cost of those treatments.
