The American Society of Human Genetics has released its annual essay contest question for students in grades 9-12. This year’s question focuses on an ever-changing, but enduring, debate: Should people be able to get predictive genetic testing via online companies, or should testing only be offered under the supervision of a medical professional? As always, students can win both a cash prize as well as genetics related materials for their school.
Teachers might consider using this contest as a way to engage students in some real-world debates as you start the school year, or as an opportunity to meet writing standards in the biology classroom.
DNA Day takes place on April 25th, marking a number of historical moments related to DNA discoveries – check out their official Twitter account for updates and news from the world of genetics.
