SUMMARY:Inclusive Pedigrees at Worcester Public Schools - Worcester\, MA
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, we’re looking forward to our professional development workshops with all 55 biology teachers in Worcester Public Schools. As a part of our collaboration\, we are teaming up with a high school biology teacher to design a new classroom activity focused on pedigree creation and analysis. The activity encourages students to use a roleplay approach to think through the personal questions that surface when discussing family histories. Gill is excited to pilot this activity with students in April.

SUMMARY:Gene Editing & CRISPR with St. Thomas Episcopal Church - ONLINE
DESCRIPTION:We’re looking forward to the fifth and final session of our virtual discussion series with congregants at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Columbus\, Georgia. This week\, we’ll be talking about CRISPR and potential uses\, from treating and curing genetic disorders\, to improving human health\, to producing nutrient-dense foods\, and for resolving pressing environmental issues. In this session\, attendees will learn about recent advances and promising applications for gene editing\, particularly CRISPR\, and consider some of the ethical\, legal\, and social dimensions of this transformative technology.

SUMMARY:Sex\, Genetics and Athletics with St. Thomas Episcopal Church - ONLINE
DESCRIPTION:Athletics are often divided into men’s and women’s categories in an effort to foster fair competition\, but efforts to define who qualifies to compete in the women’s events have been controversial. Our conversation will focus on athletics (commonly referred to as “track and field” in the US) as a lens to examine the biology of sex differences\, and how societies react to individuals with these differences. Attendees will examine the history of sex confirmation in elite athletic competition\, including the range of approaches used in the past and today\, and learn why dividing people into two sexes is not always straightforward. The goal is not to come to a consensus but to explore the topic together.

SUMMARY:Let’s Talk Genetics: A Workshop for Educators and Science Communicators - ONLINE
DESCRIPTION:How does your health relate to your genes? What can (and what can’t) commercial ancestry testing tell you? How does law enforcement use DNA in criminal investigations? Join Personal Genetics Education and Dialogue (PGED) for an interactive workshop about genetics advances and their applications\, including how to foster conversations about these topics in classrooms and community spaces. \nParticipants will learn about how genetics can intersect with personal and societal interests\, including the use of genetic information in health\, ancestry testing\, and law enforcement. Attendees will participate throughout the workshop\, including in an online game\, and will be encouraged to ask questions and share their perspectives with one another. Although this interactive workshop is geared towards educators and scientists interested in public engagement\, anyone interested in genetics is welcome to attend. \nPlease note that the workshop is limited to live attendance and will not be recorded.

SUMMARY:Engineering the World Around Us at Edward Smith Library - Northford\, CT
DESCRIPTION:Advances in genetic technologies are accompanied by questions for society about if\, where\, and how to apply these tools. A new generation of genetic tools has opened a pathway to engineering the world around us to potentially improve human health\, agriculture\, and the environment. In this program\, we focus on three potential uses of genetic engineering tools with the goal of (1) reducing food toxicity\, (2) modifying disease-carrying insects to preserve an endangered species\, and (3) reviving an extinct animal – the woolly mammoth – to possibly aid in slowing permafrost thawing. Each scenario\, drawing on current research\, raises a variety of complex ethical\, environmental\, and scientific conundrums for participants to consider.

SUMMARY:Sex\, Genetics & Athletics at Baltimore Underground Science Space (BUGSS) - Baltimore\, MD
DESCRIPTION:Athletics are often divided into men’s and women’s categories to foster fair competition\, but efforts to define who qualifies to compete in the women’s events have been controversial. In this interactive event\, attendees will use athletics (commonly referred to as “track and field” in the US) as a lens to examine the biology of sex differences and how societies react to individuals with these differences. Through a presentation and discussion\, attendees will examine the history of sex confirmation in elite athletic competition and learn why dividing people into two sexes is not always straightforward. Attendees will consider the practice of defining sex by anatomy\, DNA\, and hormones\, and then think about the various viewpoints on fairness\, diversity\, and inclusion in sports and society. The goal is not to reach a consensus\, but to explore the topic together. \nThis event is intended for middle/high school students and adult learners. It will be an informal and interactive discussion with pizza and drinks provided. Join us for some good food and great conversation!
