SUMMARY:Let’s Talk Genetics: A Workshop for Educators and Science Communicators - ONLINE
DESCRIPTION:How does your health relate to your genes? What can (and what can’t) commercial ancestry testing tell you? How does law enforcement use DNA in criminal investigations? Join Personal Genetics Education and Dialogue (PGED) for an interactive workshop about genetics advances and their applications\, including how to foster conversations about these topics in classrooms and community spaces. \nParticipants will learn about how genetics can intersect with personal and societal interests\, including the use of genetic information in health\, ancestry testing\, and law enforcement. Attendees will participate throughout the workshop\, including in an online game\, and will be encouraged to ask questions and share their perspectives with one another. Although this interactive workshop is geared towards educators and scientists interested in public engagement\, anyone interested in genetics is welcome to attend. \nPlease note that the workshop is limited to live attendance and will not be recorded.

SUMMARY:Engineering the World Around Us at Edward Smith Library - Northford\, CT
DESCRIPTION:Advances in genetic technologies are accompanied by questions for society about if\, where\, and how to apply these tools. A new generation of genetic tools has opened a pathway to engineering the world around us to potentially improve human health\, agriculture\, and the environment. In this program\, we focus on three potential uses of genetic engineering tools with the goal of (1) reducing food toxicity\, (2) modifying disease-carrying insects to preserve an endangered species\, and (3) reviving an extinct animal – the woolly mammoth – to possibly aid in slowing permafrost thawing. Each scenario\, drawing on current research\, raises a variety of complex ethical\, environmental\, and scientific conundrums for participants to consider.
