SUMMARY:Teacher Professional Development with Worcester Public Schools (Part 3) - Worcester\, MA
DESCRIPTION:This project aims to enhance high school education in Worcester\, MA\, by integrating genetic science and bioethics into the curriculum. Based on feedback from teachers who completed the first two parts of our workshop series\, PGED will develop and deliver a professional development session to support the integration of personal genetics curricula for special education and multilingual learners. This workshop is the third in a half-year-long professional development series.

SUMMARY:Inclusive Pedigrees at Worcester Public Schools - Worcester\, MA
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, we’re looking forward to our professional development workshops with all 55 biology teachers in Worcester Public Schools. As a part of our collaboration\, we are teaming up with a high school biology teacher to design a new classroom activity focused on pedigree creation and analysis. The activity encourages students to use a roleplay approach to think through the personal questions that surface when discussing family histories. Gill is excited to pilot this activity with students in April.

SUMMARY:Classroom Visit (5/5): Genome Editing & CRISPR - Hartford\, CT
DESCRIPTION:Gill was invited back to Options Employment & Education Services in Hartford\, CT\, to deliver a program series for high school students. From May 7 through June 4\, she will present a different PGED lesson. The fifth and final lesson is ‘Genome Editing & CRISPR’. \nAbout the lesson: Techniques to easily modify DNA\, known as “genome editing\,” are bringing many new possibilities and dilemmas to the forefront of medicine\, ethics\, religion\, and society at large. One technique in particular\, known as “CRISPR\,” has generated the most excitement due to its efficiency and ease of use. This lesson introduces students to the basic scientific concepts of genome editing\, its potential for improving human health\, and some of the ethical discussions surrounding the development and applications of the technique.

SUMMARY:Classroom Visit (4/5): Genome Editing & the Environment - Hartford\, CT
DESCRIPTION:Gill was invited back to Options Employment & Education Services in Hartford\, CT\, to deliver a program series for high school students. From May 7 through June 4\, she will present a different PGED lesson. The fourth lesson is ‘Genome Editing & the Environment: Engineering the World Around Us’. \nAbout the lesson: Advances in genetic technologies are accompanied by questions for society about if\, where\, and how to apply these tools. A new generation of genetic tools has opened a pathway to engineering the world around us to potentially improve human health\, agriculture\, and the environment. In this lesson plan\, we focus on three potential uses of genetic engineering tools with the goal of (1) reducing food toxicity\, (2) modifying disease-carrying insects to preserve an endangered species\, and (3) reviving an extinct animal – the woolly mammoth – to possibly aid in slowing permafrost thawing. Each scenario\, drawing on current research\, raises a variety of complex ethical\, environmental\, and scientific conundrums for students to consider.

SUMMARY:Classroom Visit (3/5): Personalized Medicine - Hartford\, CT
DESCRIPTION:Gill was invited back to Options Employment & Education Services in Hartford\, CT\, to deliver a program series for high school students. From May 7 through June 4\, she will present a different PGED lesson. The third lesson is ‘Personalized Medicine’. \nAbout the lesson: Personalized medicine\, also referred to as precision medicine\, holds great promise to improve healthcare. As the cost of genetic analysis decreases and research advances\, it is becoming increasingly possible to include a person’s genetic makeup in the repertoire of tools that inform their healthcare. This lesson asks students to delve into the hopes and challenges of personalized medicine and to consider the applications of genetic analysis in medicine.

SUMMARY:Classroom Visit (2/5): How Does Ancestry Testing Work? - Hartford\, CT
DESCRIPTION:Gill was invited back to Options Employment & Education Services in Hartford\, CT\, to deliver a program series for high school students. From May 7 through June 4\, she will present a different PGED lesson each week. The second lesson is ‘How Does Ancestry Testing Work?’ \nAbout the lesson: Technological developments in genetics have enabled people to learn about their genetic ancestry and connect with relatives around the globe. This program explores the science and limitations of genetic testing for ancestry and family history purposes. By completing this program\, participants will examine the impact that direct-to-consumer ancestry tests can have on people’s understanding of their personal\, familial\, and cultural identities.

SUMMARY:Classroom Visit (1/5): DNA\, Crime & Law Enforcement - Hartford\, CT
DESCRIPTION:Gill was invited back to Options Employment & Education Services in Hartford\, CT\, to deliver a program series for high school students. From May 7 through June 4\, she will present a different PGED lesson – starting with DNA\, Crime\, & Law Enforcement! \nAbout the lesson: The collection and analysis of DNA is an important tool in law enforcement. This lesson explores the challenge of establishing ethical and legal frameworks in a timely manner to guide the use of newly developed technologies. A key question that is woven through this lesson is how we as a society can use genetics to keep people safe\, solve crimes\, and\, at the same time\, develop policies that provide appropriate safeguards and privacy protections.
